The Real Cost of a Shopify Store in 2026

Every "how much does Shopify cost" article buries the actual number. Here's every line item, honest.

Fixed monthly costs

LineCost
Shopify Basic plan$39/mo
Domain registration~$1.25/mo (amortized $15/year)
Email hosting (Google Workspace)$6/mo per user
Baseline fixed cost~$46/mo

Per-transaction costs

Shopify Basic: 2.9% + $0.30 per card payment.

On $3,000/mo at $35 AOV (86 orders):

  • Transaction fees: ~$113/mo
  • Effective rate: 3.8% of gross

Upgrade to Shopify ($105/mo plan): drops to 2.6% + $0.30 — not worth it until you're over ~$8,000/mo.

Theme cost (one-time)

  • Free themes (Dawn, Spotlight): $0. Actually very good in 2026.
  • Paid themes (Impulse, Warehouse, Prestige): $180-$380 one-time.

For under $5K/mo in revenue, use a free theme. Upgrade later only if you're hitting conversion ceilings.

Apps (where money leaks)

The single biggest source of Shopify cost bloat is apps. Typical store ends up with 15-25 apps averaging $10-$30/mo each → $150-$500/mo in apps alone.

The only apps you actually need in year one:

AppCostWhy
Shopify EmailFree up to 10K emails/moNative, good enough
SEO Manager or YoastFree tierBasic SEO checks
Judge.me or Loox (reviews)$15/moReviews sell
Klaviyo (when over $3K/mo)$20-$45/moEmail automation worth paying for

Apps you don't need:

  • Upsell apps ($30+/mo) — Shopify has native product recommendations now
  • Abandoned cart apps — built into Shopify Email
  • Landing page builders — your theme handles this
  • Photo galleries, sliders — your theme handles this

Total app budget year one: $15-$60/mo. Anyone telling you otherwise is selling you something.

Shipping costs (pass-through)

You'll either charge shipping (revenue neutral) or offer free shipping (price-built-in). Either way, it's not really a Shopify cost.

What IS a Shopify cost: if you print labels via Shopify Shipping, you get USPS discounts ~30% below retail. That's a real save for most small stores.

Currency and international (if relevant)

  • Selling outside USD: 1.5% currency conversion fee
  • Selling internationally: Shopify Markets lets you price in local currency, auto-translates checkout
  • Skip international until US is cash-flow positive

The total cost, by revenue tier

Year 1, doing $500/mo: ~$50/mo all-in (plan + domain + email). Net margin matters less than momentum here.

Year 1, doing $3K/mo: ~$180/mo (plan + fees + 1-2 apps + email). ~6% of revenue to the platform.

Year 2, doing $10K/mo: ~$500/mo ($105 plan + ~$350 fees + $50 apps). 5% of revenue — getting cheaper per dollar as volume grows.

What Shopify costs versus what Painted Tree cost you

A typical Painted Tree vendor was paying $400-$1,200/month in booth rent plus a commission on sales. Most vendors we've talked to paid $800/mo combined.

For $39/month + ~4% transaction fees — with direct customer relationships, no geographic cap on who can buy from you, and no landlord who can disappear — you're paying less, and the channel is yours.

The platform cost was never the problem. The problem was who owned the customer list at the end of the year. On Shopify, it's you.

What to budget for year one, honest number

Minimum viable: ~$60/mo ($39 Shopify + $15 domain amortized + some free apps).

Realistic for most former Painted Tree vendors doing $2-5K/mo: ~$150/mo.

What you'd waste if you don't pick apps carefully: $400-$600/mo.

If you'd rather not learn which apps are worth it by trial and error, our Launch + Grow tier gives you a pre-configured Shopify stack we've tuned across 250+ stores. No overbuying, no app-bloat.
