Checkout friction checklist

How to use this
Run through the list on a phone in a private window while adding a real product to cart and taking it to the final step. Use a low-balance test card so you can reach the payment screen and stop. Most stores fail on the mobile and error-messaging items first.
Re-run the audit after every theme update, app install that touches checkout, or payment gateway change. New friction sneaks in from third-party scripts more often than from intentional design choices.
How we score
This is a checklist, not a graded audit. The goal is a running tally of fixes, not a letter. Items you cannot change on your platform (Shopify checkout constraints on some plans, for instance) should still stay unchecked so you can raise them with your platform team or revisit when you upgrade.
Hints expand the checklist into short implementation notes. Treat them as a first draft of the ticket you would write to fix each item.
Limitations
The audit covers known friction patterns but cannot catch platform-specific bugs, tax or shipping rule errors, or regional payment method gaps. Validate with session replay tools and support ticket tags to find the long tail.
Some items (express pay placement, checkout layout) may be outside your control on locked-in platforms. Flag these and revisit when you have editable checkout or a platform migration on the roadmap.
